ABA Seeks Letters to Congress on Pending Legislation

April 23, 2015
Reading Time: 1 min read

ABA is asking bankers to write their senators and representatives to enlist their support for several bipartisan bills introduced in recent weeks as part of ABA’s Agenda for America’s Hometown Banks:

  • Data security. This alert urges senators to co-sponsor S. 921, which would strengthen data security standards for all players and recognize the high standards already employed by the banking industry.
  • Mutuals and thrifts. This alert urges House members to support H.R. 1660 and H.R. 1661, which would help thrifts and mutual banks serve their customers while retaining their unique charter and ownership models.
  • Exam fairness. This alert urges members of Congress to support S. 774 and H.R. 1941, companion bills that would address banker concerns about fairness in exams.
  • Regulatory relief. This alert urges House members to get behind H.R. 1389 and H.R. 1233, two packages of regulatory relief measures that would designate mortgages held in portfolio as Qualified Mortgages, reduce the burden of needless privacy notice paperwork, extend the exam cycle for more institutions, simplify the Call Report and eliminate disadvantages in Basel III for the 2,000 Subchapter S community banks, among others.

“As Congress begins the critical process of determining the items to consider in the coming months, it is imperative that all bank employees contact their senators and House members to share their support for these issues,” said ABA EVP James Ballentine.

Bankers can click on the links above to use ABA’s automated system to send customized letters urging their members to co-sponsor the bills. For more information, contact ABA’s Erin Scheithe.
