New orders for manufactured goods decreased 1.4% to $491.7 billion in January, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The increase followed a 1.8% rise in December, the last of five consecutive monthly increases. January was the largest drop since July 2017.
New orders for manufactured durable goods slid 3.6% to $240.3 billion in January. Transportation equipment led the decline, falling 10.0% to $77.9 billion.
Shipments of manufactured durable goods increased 0.3% to $247.1 billion.
Inventories of manufactured durable goods, up eighteen of the last nineteen months, increased 0.3% to $408.8 billion.
