Finances remain a major source of stress in relationships, with nearly three in five people saying they have felt scared or embarrassed to discuss their financial situation with their partner, according to a new survey by TD Bank.
The survey of U.S. adults found that 59% of respondents said they were embarrassed to talk about their finances with their partner, while 68% said they feel pressure at least sometimes to appear more financially successful than they are. Three in 10 respondents (30%) admitted hiding a purchase or financial decision from a spouse, partner or family member.
The survey also found that 75% of respondents said they have delayed at least one major life milestone because of their current financial situation. Two-thirds (67%) said they have received financial assistance from family members or someone close to them. Gen Z respondents were the most likely to have delayed milestones and received financial assistance.
