A growing number of employees with health savings accounts are contributing to those accounts, with more than half of employees choosing an HSA option when offered the option, according to a new survey by the Plan Sponsor Council of America.
The survey – which was sponsored by HSA Bank – found that 83% of employees with health savings accounts contributed to those accounts this year, up from roughly 73% last year. Fifty-seven percent of employees choose an HSA when given a choice. The average account balance at the end of 2025 was $6,477.
More than three-quarters of employers make contributions to HSAs, with more than half providing a set amount per coverage level and roughly one in five providing a set amount per employee, according to the survey. Forty-six percent of organizations automatically enroll employees in an HSA if they enroll in the HSA-qualifying health option, up from 43.1% in 2025 and from 35.1% five years ago. More than two-thirds of organizations offer investment options for HSA contributions.
The survey also found that 35% of organizations reward employees for health and wellness program participation.
