As the nation emerges from the July 4 holiday and continues its year‑long reflection on America’s 250th anniversary, we reflect on a national story defined by resilience, innovation and the pursuit of opportunity. From the earliest days of the republic to today’s digital economy, America’s banks have been central to that story – financing growth, strengthening communities, and expanding pathways to prosperity for generations.
For more than a century, the ABA Foundation has helped carry this legacy forward. By equipping banks with free programs, tools and partnerships, we help ensure that every community – large or small, rural or urban – has access to the financial knowledge and support needed to thrive. As we commemorate the nation’s semiquincentennial, we honor the industry’s historic role in expanding opportunity and reaffirm our shared commitment to shaping a more inclusive and prosperous future.
A historic role in building, growing and sustaining the nation
From the founding era to the present day, banks have played a defining role in building the economic backbone of the United States. After independence, early banks helped stabilize public credit, support commerce and finance the farms, small businesses and infrastructure that connected a young nation. As America grew, banks powered the country’s transformation – financing railroads, factories and the small businesses that fueled innovation and job creation. They supported immigrant communities building new lives in America and helped millions of families achieve homeownership after World War II, contributing to the rise of the middle class.
Banks have also stood with communities through moments of profound challenge. During economic downturns, natural disasters and the COVID‑19 pandemic, banks stepped forward to help families and small businesses recover and rebuild. This enduring commitment reflects a core industry belief: when communities are strong, banks are strong.
Our nation – and our financial system – has not always made opportunity accessible to all. But across generations, banks have helped drive meaningful progress, expanding access to financial services, credit and economic mobility. That work continues today.
Advancing financial capability and inclusion: The ABA Foundation’s leadership
As the banking industry evolved, so did its commitment to financial education and inclusion. For more than 100 years, the ABA Foundation has helped banks turn that commitment into action.
Through free, turnkey programs, the Foundation equips banks to deliver high‑impact financial education in classrooms, community centers, workplaces and beyond.
In just the past three years, these programs have helped more than 1,300 banks and 110,000 bank volunteers reach over six million people – demonstrating the industry’s deep commitment to strengthening financial capability nationwide.
Expanding opportunity for the next generation, – and an industry call to action
America’s story is one of opportunity. For 250 years, banks have helped turn that promise into reality – opening doors to homeownership, entrepreneurship, education and financial security for millions of Americans.
The next chapter of the American story will require deeper partnerships, bold leadership and a renewed commitment to financial capability for every household. The ABA Foundation stands ready to support banks in this mission and is developing new initiatives designed to advance long‑term financial security and generational wealth‑building.
In the months ahead, we will work closely with banks across the country to elevate opportunities to support more Americans on their path to wealth-building.
We invite every bank to join us – engage with our programs, share your expertise and partner with us in building the future of American Opportunity.
Together, we can ensure that the promise of opportunity reaches every household, every community and every generation – for the next 250 years and beyond.
