In an unanticipated move yesterday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that it will halt regular National Flood Insurance Program operations during the government shutdown, a decision that will complicate and potentially delay loan closings for borrowers seeking mortgages where NFIP coverage is required.


If Congress and President Trump do not reach agreement today on a spending bill, the federal government will begin partial shutdown procedures at midnight tonight. Several agencies will close all but essential operations.


The Senate today voted 81 to 18 to fund the federal government through Feb. 8, a step toward ending the government shutdown that began on Saturday morning, after which the House voted 266 to 150 to send the measure to President Trump, who was expected to sign it.
