ABA DataBank: Trade balance narrower than expected

ABA DataBank: November trade balance shows wider deficit on strong imports

The U.S. trade balance, which measures trade in goods and services, came in at a deficit of $105.0 billion in September, narrowing by $0.7 billion from a revised deficit of $105.7 billion in August and below expectations of a $107.9 billion deficit. Imports rose to $426.6 billion, a 1.2% increase from August, while exports reached $321.5 billion, a 1.9% increase from the previous month.

The ABA Office of the Chief Economist believes that September’s smaller-than-expected trade deficit reflects stable demand for U.S. goods and services. For banks, improving export conditions may bolster commercial lending opportunities among internationally exposed businesses, while ongoing trade uncertainty could continue to influence investment decisions and credit demand.
