Health savings accounts held nearly $192 billion across 42.6 million accounts as of June 30, with investments now making up the majority of HSA assets, HSA investment solution provider Devenir said in its midyear report.
The report found that HSA assets rose 20% from a year earlier, while account growth was 7%, up from 6% a year ago. Invested balances reached $100 billion, representing 52% of HSA assets, up from 46% a year earlier. About 4.7 million accounts held investments by mid-2026.
The number of accounts holding at least $10,000 reached 4.4 million, six times the level a decade ago, Devenir said. Nearly 1.9 million accounts now hold $25,000 or more, a fourteenfold increase over the same period.
Account holders contributed $35.2 billion and withdrew $23.8 billion, retaining $11.5 billion during the period, according to the report. Recently opened accounts remained particularly strong net contributors, with 2026 accounts contributing more than four dollars for every dollar withdrawn.
