FHA proposes changes to single-family housing minimum property requirements

ABA offers recommendations for improving community investment programs

The Federal Housing Administration yesterday proposed to “modernize and strengthen” its minimum property requirements, or MPR, for single-family housing by aligning them with other industry standards.

Earlier this year, the Department of Housing and Urban Development opened a review of single-family MPR for FHA mortgages as part of President Trump’s March executive order on promoting access to mortgage credit. The American Bankers Association joined with other associations in urging HUD to align FHA requirements with those used by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

According to an FHA statement, the proposal would align its MPR with industry standards, reorganize the content and structure of the requirements for ease of use, simplify its policy with more concise language, refine the scope of standards to reasonably necessary actions, and define property eligibility and acceptability standards more clearly.

Public comment on the proposal will be accepted through Nov. 6.
