FDIC’s Hill: Standards-setting organization could spur bank-fintech partnerships

The American Bankers Association today announced an investment in BankTech Ventures Fund II, a community-bank-backed venture fund focused on identifying and supporting innovative technology companies that help banks operate more efficiently, better serve customers and compete more effectively in a rapidly evolving marketplace.

The investment was approved by ABA’s Executive Committee acting on a recommendation from ABA’s Venture Investment Committee, which evaluates opportunities that align with the association’s mission of supporting a strong, innovative and competitive banking industry.

“ABA is committed to helping banks of all sizes navigate a changing technology landscape and identify solutions that improve the customer experience while strengthening bank operations,” said ABA President and CEO Rob Nichols. “BankTech Ventures has built a strong network of community bank partners and has focused on technologies designed specifically for the banking industry. This investment gives ABA a unique opportunity to gain early insight into emerging innovations while supporting technologies that can help banks better serve their customers.”

Community bank technology

Founded in 2021, BankTech Ventures is a strategic venture fund backed by community and regional banks and focused on investing in early-stage, bank-ready fintech companies across the banking technology ecosystem. The fund’s model emphasizes both financial returns and practical value for participating banks through access to innovative technology providers, industry insights and opportunities for collaboration.

“Community banks are seeking technologies that help them compete, grow and serve customers more effectively,” said Carey Ransom, BankTech Ventures’ managing director. “We’re excited to welcome ABA as an investor in Fund II. ABA’s commitment to innovation and its leadership across the banking industry make it a critical partner as we connect banks with the next generation of fintech solutions.”

ABA investments

The investment builds on ABA’s existing venture investment strategy and reflects the association’s ongoing commitment to identifying innovative technologies and companies that can deliver value to banks and their customers. Through its Venture Investment Committee, ABA evaluates investments that provide strategic value to member banks while offering insights into emerging technologies and trends shaping the future of financial services.

The committee’s work is designed to help ABA stay connected to innovation occurring across the banking and fintech sectors and identify solutions that can benefit banks and their customers. The committee also considers how investments can expand ABA’s access to new technologies, deepen industry insights and strengthen relationships across the bank innovation ecosystem.
