FBI publishes first cyber strategy roadmap

The FBI this week released its first “cyber strategy” that outlines the law enforcement agency’s priorities in combating cybercrime and protecting critical infrastructure.

According to the document, the cyber strategy will guide the FBI in how it uses its resources “to disrupt and deter cyber adversaries, support victims, build world-class capabilities and drive coordinated action.” The roadmap was developed as part of the broader Trump Administration Cyber Strategy, released in March.

“Today’s cyber threat picture is shaped by two overlapping forces: disciplined, state-sponsored actors leveraging national power to penetrate U.S. networks and critical infrastructure for intelligence collection and disruption, and a mature, profit-driven criminal marketplace that industrializes ransomware, fraud and cryptocurrency theft,” the document states.

The cyber strategy calls on the FBI to impose costs on cyber actors who target the U.S.; engage in rapid victim support; explore partnerships with the private sector, other agencies and international counterparts; and invest in tools and capabilities to target cyber criminals.

The document follows the release of Operation Winter Shield earlier this year, which lists 10 strategies that organizations should pursue to improve resilience against cyber intrusions.
