John Crews was sworn in today as chairman of the National Credit Union Administration, the agency announced. Crews currently is the only member of the NCUA board.
The Senate confirmed Crews as an NCUA board member on Aug. 7. President Trump designated him chairman following the departure of former Chairman Kyle Hauptman, who recently stepped down to become a member of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board.
Crews most recently was deputy assistant secretary for financial institutions policy at the Treasury Department. In a statement, Crews said that he intends to focus on two Trump administration goals: enabling innovation and right-sizing the financial services regulatory framework.
“My priorities include safeguarding the interests of credit union member-owners, promoting regulatory efficiency, maintaining a strong and healthy National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, and supporting initiatives that promote access to affordable financial services nationwide,” he said.
Trump last year fired Democrats Todd Harper and Tanya Otsuka from the NCUA board despite both having several years left in their board terms. Both are challenging their firings in federal court.
