There were $483.9 billion in retail and food service sales in September, up 1.6% from the previous month and 4.4% from September 2016, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. August’s number was revised to reflect a 0.1% decline.
Core retail sales – excluding automobiles and parts – grew 1.0%. Year-over-year core sales increased 4.6%.
Retail trade sales increased 1.6% from August and 4.7% from last year. Sales at nonstore retailers grew 0.5% following August’s 0.4% decline. Nonstore retailer sales are up 9.2% year-over-year as online retailers continue to grow their market share.
Sales at gasoline stations surged 5.8% during September after growing 4.1% in August. Gasoline station sales are up 11.4% since September 2016.
